How Our Barcode Generator Works

Our Barcode Generator is a client-side tool that creates barcodes using the HTML5 Canvas API. You enter the text you want to encode, select a barcode format, and customize the appearance. The generator then renders the barcode pattern directly in your browser without sending any data to servers.

The tool supports multiple barcode formats including CODE128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, CODE39, ITF-14, MSI, and Pharmacode. Each format has specific requirements for the data it can encode. CODE128 accepts any ASCII text, while EAN and UPC formats require numeric input of specific lengths. The generator validates your input against the format requirements and provides feedback if the data is invalid.

Appearance customization includes bar width, barcode height, and text display options. The bar width setting controls the thickness of individual bars, which affects the overall width of the barcode. The height setting determines how tall the barcode is, which impacts scanning reliability — taller barcodes are generally easier to scan.

The show text option adds the encoded value as human-readable text below the barcode. This is standard practice for most barcode applications because it allows manual data entry if the barcode cannot be scanned. You can toggle this feature based on your specific labeling requirements.

Barcode Generation Best Practices

Creating scannable, reliable barcodes requires attention to detail in both data preparation and visual formatting. Follow these best practices to ensure your barcodes work correctly in production environments.

Verify your data meets the format requirements before generating. EAN-13 requires exactly 13 digits, UPC-A requires 12 digits, and EAN-8 requires 8 digits. CODE128 is more flexible but works best with alphanumeric text under 20 characters for optimal scanning reliability. Providing invalid data results in unscannable barcodes that waste labels and cause operational delays.

Choose appropriate dimensions for your scanning environment. Barcodes that are too small may be difficult for scanners to read, especially if the scanning distance is variable. Barcodes that are too large waste label space. A good rule of thumb is to keep the barcode width between 1.5 and 4 inches for handheld scanners, with a height of at least 0.5 inches.

Ensure adequate quiet zones around the barcode. Quiet zones are the blank margins on either side of the barcode pattern. Most formats require a quiet zone of at least 10 times the narrowest bar width. Our generator automatically includes quiet zones, but when printing barcodes in your own designs, make sure not to place other graphics too close to the barcode edges.

Test barcodes with the actual scanning equipment used in your environment.
